History

On September 4, 2012, General Cable purchased the Alcan Cable North American business from Rio Tinto Alcan.

Read about the history of General Cable.

Like General Cable, the former Alcan Cable has a long history in the wire and cable industry tracing its beginnings back to 1902, soon after Canada’s first aluminum smelter opened in Shawinigan, Quebec. As the first wire and cable fabricating facility of any consequence in the region, the Alcan Cable mill provided the cable to transmit power to the historic Montreal market some 86 miles away, and went on to become a mainstay of the local community. In 1939, Alcan Cable began its first U.S. presence with what was to become a 24-year partnership with Central Cable in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania.
With the acquisition of Central Cable in 1963, Alcan Cable established its first fabricating facility in the United States. Over the next several decades, the company expanded it manufacturing operations to five production facilities located in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Quebec, and China.

Alcan Cable traces its beginnings back to 1902, soon after Canada’s first aluminum smelter opened in Shawinigan, Quebec. As the first wire and cable fabricating facility of any consequence in the region, our mill provided the cable to transmit power to the historic Montreal market some 86 miles away, and went on to become a mainstay of the local community. In 1939, Alcan Cable began its first U.S. presence with what was to become a 24-year partnership with Central Cable in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania.

By 1963, we grew to acquire Central Cable and created Alcan Cable’s first fabricating facility in the United States. Today, our company comprises five manufacturing plants and a Technology Center in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Our newest manufacturing facility is located in Tianjin, China and manufactures aluminum alloy products for China’s commercial building market. With our headquarters in Atlanta, GA, we now have operations in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Ontario, and China.

Over the past 100 years, Alcan Cable has evolved into a leading supplier of aluminum energy cables. We maintain well-established relationships with investor-owned utilities, electrical distributors, and original equipment manufacturers, and have built a reputation for committed stewardship, product quality, and meeting or exceeding safety standards. We are also a staunch supporter of anti-counterfeit initiatives and actively support the campaign against non-compliant products that create post-sale risks that jeopardize the reputation of the aluminum industry. As a top-ranked producer of aluminum energy cables and building wire, we deliver increased productivity, competitiveness, and profitability to our customers.
